My Investigation: Sea Monkeys

By: Student Scientist H.
Kentucky, Age 9

MY INVESTIGATION: SEA MONKEYS
I am investigating sea monkeys. Sea monkeys come from a local store in a package. When you put them in water they seem to come to life!
WHY DID I CHOOSE MY TOPIC
I wanted to find there life cycle. We haven’t learned that yet but we will probably find this information later in the experiment.

MATERIALS*
1 plastic beaker
1 cup of sand
60 ml. Of rock salt
1 cup of water
MY HYPOTHESIS
Sea monkeys live in salt water better than fresh water.
HOW DID I TEST MY TOPIC
First we took two cups and divided equal amounts of tap water between them.
In the first cup we added 60ml of rock salt, one quarter of sand, and 2 scoops of sea monkey eggs.
In the second cup of tap water we only added 2 scoops of sea monkey eggs.
* PROCEDURE
1. Put a small portion of rock salt into a plastic measuring cup.
2. Use marker tip to crush rock salt.
3. Continue crushing until 60 ml of rock salt has been crushed.
4. Pour the rock salt into a plastic beaker.
5. Pour in 1 cup of tap water.
6. Stir in 2 scoops of sea monkey eggs.
7. Set on counter by window.
WHY DID I TEST IT THIS WAY
We used rock salt because we thought that it was closest to sea salt. We chose rock salt because we thought baking soda wouldn’t work.
WHAT DID I FIND OUT
We found out that most died in tap water because there was no rock salt. In the cup with rock salt we found out that rock salt water is closer to sea salt.
MY NEW QUESTIONS
Why did they live in salt water better than fresh water? What will the sea monkeys look like?
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENT
I would use sea salt instead of rock salt because sea monkeys live in the sea.

This was a good basic experiment where you had two different conditions: a beaker with rock salt and a beaker with plain tap water. It is important that you try to collect quantitative data for your experiment. For example, how many sea monkeys lived in each cup? These data will help you to learn if your two conditions are really different. You have good new questions to try to answer. Perhaps you can find some sea water (or something like Instant Ocean mix for aquariums) and test these out soon. Keep investigating!
